MIRI – Forest fires are surging again in Sarawak, with a significant hotspot in Mukah district in Sarawak detected before it was tackled by firefighters, said the state Fire and Rescue Department.

The fire raged in a forested area, razing about four hectares or an area the size of about ten football fields, said the department in a press release today.

The Mukah fire station received a report about the fire soon after it began yesterday morning.

Firefighters deployed to the site fought the flames until about 7pm yesterday when they managed to contain and douse it.

“Water tankers were deployed to the site of the forest fires to facilitate total flooding of the site that was on fire.

“We had to use pumps and a hose measuring 1,400ft long to reach the fire site. Fire breaks were also created to stop the flames from spreading further.

“The fire was doused at about 7pm,” the department said.

A probe is being conducted to determine how the fire began. Parts of Sarawak have been experiencing a very hot spell recently. – The Vibes, August 15, 2023
